Cờ Tào Cáo is the Vietnamese name for backgammon — the oldest two-player board game still played, at roughly five thousand years old. Each child takes fifteen checkers and races them in opposite directions around twenty-four points: roll two dice, use both numbers, stack two checkers on a point to block your opponent, and land on a lone checker to send it to the centre bar. Once all fifteen checkers are home, you start bearing them off; the first player to clear the board wins. It gives children practice at adding within twelve, weighing risk, and thinking a move or two ahead.
